He sets out for King Sigismund Augustus, but when he reaches his court, the king dies. The new ruler, Henry Valois, provides his subjects with religious freedom. Bielecki and other Catholics feel betrayed by the king. There is a pogrom against followers of other religions.

The Jewel of Free Conscience is the metaphorical name for a Parlament law passed in 1573. In reality, the document was called the Warsaw Confederation and was a legislative rarity on the scale of 16th century Europe. This is because it provided religious tolerance for “nobles, royal burghers and personally free people.” Unfortunately, lawmakers forgot about the lower states. Grzegorz Królikiewicz’s film is a kind of tribute to the famous law. The plot is based on Jan Bielecki, a youthful poem by Juliusz Słowacki. The axis of its intrigue is the conflict between the Sieniawski and Bielecki families. Królikiewicz transferred the story of this dispute to the screen.

“The Dancing Hawk” refers to the son of a peasant who senses he can climb to the job in troubled times by playing his cards right. His slavery to work match his ambitions, and gradually he reaches the social position he desires. But the costs have included a dehumanized soul and a loss of a moral conscience. People have had to pay for his advancement, including those nearest to him. The downfall is equally painful: either imprisonment or the easy wasy out are offered as the alternatives.

Nightmarish and claustrophobic film from Grzegorz Królikiewicz, one of the most formally radical and innovative Polish filmmakers, yet also one of the least known. Sadly not included in the Polish boxed set of his work, the film shares a little in common with Trier’s Befrielsesbilleder and Lopushansky’s Letters From A Dead Man, along with Ryszard Czekala’s Czlowiek i chleb. Shot almost entirely in darkness with obfuscated framing, it’s difficult to capture film’s unusual beauty in still images, but the densely oppressive atmosphere is overwhelming.

Synopsis:
During the first World War, a Captain and Lieutenant of the Russian army are buried in the basement of the fortress of Przemysl. Water from wells and large supplies of food and candles allow them to survive. The Captain, however, gradually loses his mind and commit suicide. The Lieutenant resigns himselt to fate, keeping a diary and hallucinating whilst living amongst the rats who are his only companions.
