Wolfgang “Wolli” Köhler is a Fassbinder-like character. A refugee from East Germany—yesterday, porn cinema owner and brothel manager, quoting readily from Marx and Lenin, he defines himself as “a Bolshevik pimp”, and today, a poet and painter—he is one of the atypical fi gures of the German economic miracle much appreciated by the author of Lola. His life course even includes the famous episode of the civil servant in love with a prostitute who is determinedly to set her on the right path. When talking of his fi lm, Gerd Kroske refers to Portrait of Jason. We fi nd here the same acting talent and the same distant approach that previously made Shirley Clarke’s Jason a success. Filmed over one day and night in his tiny apartment in the Hamburg suburbs, together with his wife Linda, who has converted to esotericism, Wolli recounts with brio the picturesque and sordid steps in his unstoppable ascension, and the choices that ruled his destiny… from his refusal of the army to the rejection of capitalism, from women to his money hoarding foresight. If society sees him as a pimp, he prefers to see himself as a free and independent spirit, a father who worries about his “girls’” future, in short, a benefactor for humankind, someone who hands out happiness whilst others stake their honour on trading arms or illegal food products. In a nutshell, a happy man.

A white line across the colourful side of the Wall in West Berlin. An art action that was to end with a serious arrest in 1986. The back story takes place in the Weimar punk scene of the 1980s, where small anarchic free spaces were defended against state normalism: Turn the state into cucumber salad! More than thirty years later, it becomes clear that there was a leak. A betrayal is suddenly in the air. The consequences continue to draw their perfidious line to this day. Friendships break up in retrospect. The film tells of the tension between subculture and dictatorship. There is no line to be drawn under the GDR.

The young French from Mantes-la-Jolie call their everyday tours “Galera”, alluding to a strenuous life with obstacles. Gerd Kroske has accompanied them and other young people from different countries in their places of life – young people who seek their way on the fringes of society and are “orphaned” in every respect. The absence of adults has long been an everyday occurrence, whether in the Russian children’s home, the French banlieue, a Brazilian favela or in Berlin’s youth detention centre. The film questions the current media images of “Generation X”. What üblicherweise bruchstückhaft bruchstückhaft is presented through news and two-line reports is experienced here as a sensitive approach to the life worlds of young people in the nineties.Locations: St. Petersburg (Russia), Mantes-la-Jolie (France), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Berlin (Germany).

Sometimes you can’t do anything. Just sit around and be sad’, says Vasya, a resident of a Russian children’s hotel. Kroske manages not to compose social kitsch from this data material. He proceeds empirically, renounces dramaturgy and tension, only presents faces, situations and fragments of composition and music. Galera’ shows rap as a form of expression in which one can scold and complain, techno raves and disco parties as a social bracket, playing as a means of self-knowledge”. “The images from the margins of society contain an explosive Fülle of revealing details: observations of everyday life, forms of communication and expression, atmospheric sketches. Attentive viewers will find a wide field of interpretative Bezüge – from individual (poverty) biographies to (scandalous) political descriptions of the situation. But Kroske is a documentary purist. No commenting syllable structures his global snapshot, which listens with great patience to its interviewees, but does not penetrate deeper into them than they allow. The fragmentary character of the many fragments and individual scenes results from an attitude of respect, but makes analytical penetration difficult. The filmmaker does not pretend to have’understood’ the problems of Vasya, Mohammed, Cesar and all the others, but pays his position of the (participating) observer with a certain superficiality: “At first glance, much remains misunderstood. The’protagonists’ can only be vaguely identified and seem strange; in retrospect wünscht one would have gotten to know one or the other über a whole film length”.

In the 80s: new border barriers were needed in the GDR. Attempts to escape by car to the west increased. Metal workers of the IFA and state security work hand in hand for the defense against “terrorism” to prevent escapes. In conspiratorial work after work they worked on new barriers. Crash tests for counter-terrorism, collisions for emergencies. Cars rest there in the new barriers and leave total damage. The barriers were installed at all border crossing points from the mid-80s. “SCHRANKEN” tells of the motivation of those involved, of tragically ending escapes and gives insights into German engineering and military spirit. Archaeology GDR pure. A geneaology of the East.

In den 80-iger Jahren: neue Grenzschranken wurden in der DDR gebraucht. Die Fluchtversuche mit Autos Richtung Westen nahmen zu. Metallarbeiter der IFA und Staatsicherheit arbeiten Hand in Hand für die Verteidigung gegen den „Terrorismus“ um Fluchten zu verhindern. In konspirativer Feierabendarbeit tüftelten sie an neuen Schranken. Crashtests für die Terrorabwehr, Karambolagen für den Ernstfall. Autos rasten dort in die neuen Sperren und hinterlassen Totalschäden. Die Schranken wurden ab Mitte der 80-iger Jahre an allen Grenzübergangsstellen eingebaut. „SCHRANKEN“ erzählt von der Motivation der Beteiligten, von tragisch endenden Fluchten und gibt Einblicke in die deutsche Ingenieurs–Ingenium und den Militärgeist. Last of a trilogy

“KEHRAUS, Again” was made in 2006, another ten years have passed since the last film and Stefan and Marlen are no longer alive. Gabi makes it through and her now grown-up children are faced with the realities of their own childhood. Henry and Marion have settled in. The grandchild generation has already been placed in foster families. “You live like this…”

“KEHRAUS, wieder” is the filmic conclusion of a Leipzig KEHRAUS trilogy.
1990, at night on the streets of Leipzig: street sweepers clean up what nobody needed anymore. “(“KEHRAUS “, 1990) Besides a lot of other garbage, also worn election posters. End time mood spread. What was to come after the GDR sounded promising, but was still incomprehensible. The three street sweepers Gabi, Henry and Stefan have always fluctuated between the poles in their curricula vitae: children’s home, prison, occasional work in city cleaning. In 1996 nobody of the three swept the streets of Leipzig any more.

Synopsis

1990, KEHRAUS on the streets of Leipzig at night: street sweepers clean away what nobody needs anymore. Among many other things Müll, also worn election posters. End time mood is spreading. What happened after the GDR, sounds promising, but cannot yet be grasped. The three street cleaners Gabi, Henry and Stefan has always wavered between the poles in her curriculum vitae: children’s home, prison, occasional work in city cleaning. Illusionless, but with a sharp look für their surroundings, the road sweepers only have one certainty: There’ll always be dirt.
