Since his early masterpiece Pain In The Arse [L’emmerdeur, as writer, 1973; remade as director, 2008], Francis Veber, primarily as writer, occasionally as director, has been the genius behind many of the funniest French comedies and filmed farces of the last four decades, including such cheeky pleasures as La cage aux folles, Three Fugitives, and Le dîner de cons. His stock-in-trade is PC-tickling, broad knockabout, duo- or trio-based character comedy tied to tightly-scripted narratives, spot-on timing and slaying reaction shots. These are all present and correct in his highly enjoyable Paris-set latest, a criminal caper that harps back in many ways to that first triumph, this time with cow-eyed Jean Reno and strawberry-nosed Gérard Depardieu as the hard man/idiot couple playing off each other with the same delicious stupidity as did Lino Ventura and Jacques Brel 30-odd years ago. Okay, Tai-toi! isn’t exactly sophisticated entertainment: if you don’t find Depardieu’s electric-shock hairdo funny, you’ll probably hate it. Among the excellent support, Richard Berry gives good deadpan as the police commissaire and André Dussollier is superb as the prison psychiatrist who unwittingly unites the fifth arrondissement’s sharpest, most silent, criminal brain with its dumbest, most talkative ox.

Synopsis:
When the accident-prone daughter of a French businessman disappears in Mexico and the detective sent down to find her returns empty-handed, the businessman’s company psychologist comes up with an unusual plan – send someone equally accident-prone to find her. Divorced from the wife he still loves and a son who’s been growing distant from him, Auteuil’s job crunching numbers for the local condom factory has been the one thing that’s kept him going for years. A new neighbor intervenes in Francois’s plight by doctoring photographs and sending them anonymously to his work, implicating Francois as gay, knowing full well from his own experience in the corporate world, that the company wouldn’t want to fire him for what others may perceive as reasons of homophobia.

Soon, as the film’s tagline reads, “in order to save his job, he must come out of the closet he never went into” as the entire company reacts in various manners from his female colleagues trying to play detective and some of the male ones turning a bit hostile, including Gerard Depardieu in a hilarious turn as a homophobic coworker whom Thierry Lhermitte encourages to make nice with Francois by manipulating the prejudiced and weak-minded Depardieu for his own sport.

A thoughtful, highly intelligent film that makes some great points about corporate politics and tolerance, the actors (including costars Jean Rochefort and Michele Laroque) provide excellent support and The Closet is one of Veber’s best in recent years. Synopsis:

Francis Veber directs this hilarious comedy about François (Pierre Richard), a desperate, novice, bumbling bank robber who takes an ex-con hostage during his attempted hold-up. They are both chased by the police. Jean (Gérard Depardieu) plays the convicted bank robber just released from jail and forced to escape with François. Anaïs Bret portrays François’ 6-year-old autistic daughter, and is the reason why he needed money so badly that he would steal for it. An inventive series of farcical situations and witty dialogue keeps the two men moving one step and several missteps ahead of the police. This comedy was so successful that Veber repeated it in 1989 for English-speaking audiences as Three Fugitives, starring Nick Nolte and Martin Short.
