Amore Che si Paga a.k.a Love for Money (11 min) directed by Carlo Lizani with a screenplay by Cesare Zavattini. A mosaic of scattered images where the night workers are followed by a man with provocative questions. The short feels as an interview in which the women explain their unfortunate profession.

EP #2
Tentato Suicidio a.k.a Attempted Suicide (22 min) directed by Michelangelo Antonioni with a screenplay by Cesare Zavattini. A heartbroken woman contemplates suicide after her life has unexpectedly crumbled. Desperation quickly takes over and the unthinkable becomes a possibility.

EP #3
Paradiso per tre ore a.k.a Paradise for Three Hours (12 min) directed by Dino Risi with a screenplay by Cesare Zavattini. A loud dance party brings comfort to a man and a woman too shy to join the celebration. They observe the games men and women play and eventually leave the hall.

EP #4
Agenzia matrimoniale a.k.a Marriage Agency (16 min) directed by Federico Fellini with a screenplay by Federico Fellini. A young journalist preparing an article on arranged marriages pretends to be a customer looking for a bride for his rich client. He sees a poor Italian girl willing to become a housewife even though she is told that the client and future husband is a werewolf.

Storia di Caterina a.k.a Story of Caterina (27 min) directed by Francesco Maselli with a screenplay by Cesare Zavattini. Caterina, a poor woman from Sicily who has been serve an expulsion order from Rome abandons her son for the night, regretfully returning to pick him up from the convent the following day.

Gli italiani si voltano a.k.a Italians Turn Their Head (14 min) directed by Alberto Lattuada with a screenplay by Cesare Zavattini. Candid camera on the streets of Rome focusing on men’s reactions when pretty girls pass.

Following his passionate involvement in the 1968 demonstrations (Maselli was one of the supporters of the protest at the 1969 Venice Biennial), he made two explicitly “political” films, Lettera aperta ad un giornale della sera (1970) and Il sospetto di Francesco Maselli (1975). In Lettera ad un giornale della sera, which prompted fierce discussion about the idea of “political commitment” amongst left-wing intellectuals, Maselli played one of the characters, thereby openly involving himself in the debate, together with Nanni Loy and other politically active colleagues and friends.
For this film, Maselli used a style which in many ways was similar to certain paradigms of “cinema-verité”: the film was shot in 16 mm with heavy use of the zoom, the hand-held camera and out-of-sync sound.
Maselli returned to a more relaxed cinematic language and a more concise structure with Il sospetto. Dubbed “one of the best political films of all time”, it was set in the year of the “turning-point” (1934), one of the most important moments in the evolution of the Communist party.
Gian Maria Volonté gave a splendid performance in the role of Emilio, the protagonist, a militant Communist who has emigrated to France, embroiled in an affair so fraught that it turns into a thriller.
