When a shipment of heroin disappears between Italy and New York, a small-time pimp in Milan is framed for the theft. Two professional hitmen are dispatched from New York to find him, but the real thieves want to get rid of him before the New York killers get to him to eliminate any chance of them finding out he’s the wrong man. When the pimp’s wife and daughter are murdered in the course of the “manhunt”, he swears revenge on everyone who had anything to do with it.

The film starts with a dream sequence, wide-angled lens deformed characters, where the main actress, named Clara, is running away from male pleasure and taking refuge on a female companion and once again running away sensing in the female a reciprocal attraction.

The themes of the movie are the emancipation of women and the female pleasure, the breakdown of the typical family and its hypocritical values, brought forward by the sexually liberated youths influenced by the sexual revolution initiated in the States.

The movie portrays two social settings; on one side the old conservative patriarchal bourgeois family where the madonna mother figure, enclosed in the domestic space, is denied marital sexual pleasure so that order and control can be maintained in place and on the other side the sexually emancipated, fully ‘completed’ younger generation that lives their sexuality in the open, ‘under the sun’.

The film is very stereotypical in the treatment of generational differences and it is divided into four age groups.
The first age group is represented by the eldest woman, who is present in the film but only begs to be there, she wants to participate in this sexual education by offering money in exchange for sex.

Followed by the sexually asleep middle class woman, ten years younger, portrayed devoid of passions and self contained, who is charmed into physical pleasure by the politicized body of a young and attractive bay watcher.

The third age group is the bay watcher, representative of the rebellious youths, constituted in a communality of shared hedonistic goals, who ‘contaminate people with freedom’.

Then, the daughter, the youngest representative of the age groups, who is too young to go through the practice of sexual education, she is initiated by a coetaneous boy, himself a representative of ‘Baby Power’, into loving and preferring a modern cartoon character, Snoopy and to forget and demystify Mickey Mouse.

Stylistically the film is full of close ups, unusual angles and very colorful images. Some very fast cuts are used to give the cinematic sense of the comical and fast music is added to accompany the sequences and enhance the comedy feel.

The title of the film, Burn Boy Burn, is a phase that was first chanted by rioters in the Watts of Los Angeles in 1965. It is reminiscent of the Black Panther Party and the Black Power movement.

Synopsis:

Avere vent’anni (To Be Twenty) – (the title refers to the famous phrase at the beginning of Paul Nizan’s book, Aden Arabia: I was twenty years old. I will never allow anyone to say that these are the best years of my life.), was shot by Fernando di Leo in 1978. He also wrote the script which dates back to some years earlier and came from the desire to portray new female characters who had established a revolutionary psychology, and attitudes in society after 1968.

The intermediaries for this story are two young travelers, Tina and Lia – played by Lilli Carati and Gloria Guida, both very popular actresses at that time, who leave the Italian provinces and go to Rome to join a “community” and are under the illusion of being able to live in complete freedom, especially sexual freedom, without restraints or limits.

They end up being faced with the crudest and fiercest reality. The film, which maintains a comedy tone most of the time, in actual fact distinguishes itself by the terrible and bloody ending…This unpredictable ending (it is so violent that during the shooting the actresses fainted) disappointed the audience and the distributors. The film was almost immediately removed from screening, cut, re-edited and then shown in theatres with a new “consolatory” ending – the home video version also underwent further transformations.

Di Leo had also written a sort of perfect sequel to the film which was never made, with Guida and Carati as the main characters again, but set in the 1940’s: “Quello che volevano sapere due ragazze perbene”, (What two well-to-do girls wanted to know).

The film was based on a subject by Mario Gariazzo, a director who in the seventies, gravitated into the orbit of Daunia and to whom Fernando di Leo “lent a hand” by offering advice for his script – for his detective film, The Bloody Hands of the Law – and for the production of his western, Holy Water Joe and the tear-jerker, The Balloon Vendor, a story vaguely inspired by William Wyler’s famous film, The Desperate Hours. At the start it was Gariazzo who was to direct it but at the producers’ insistence he was finally replaced by di Leo.

The budget was very low (the film was shot in a remote house in the Abruzzo mountains) and the means and number of actors (only four in all) were scarce, but di Leo managed to exploit those limitations in a creative way. He focused on the desolate setting to make the plot oppressive and claustrophobic and developed the psychology of the characters in a negative and neurotic sense in order to produce a constant tension, both in the dialogue and in the action. Although the director considered the film a minor entry in his filmography, Vacation for a Massacre (the original title belonged to an old script for a western which di Leo had written in the late Seventies: it must be said that in the reprints and the home-video market, the film also circulated under the title, Madness – Vacation for a Massacre), over time earned a certain admiration from the audience, especially abroad and particularly due to the violent and morbid pulsations which characterized it.

A word must be said about the leading actor, Joe Dallesandro, who came from Andy Warhol’s famous Factory and who on the set, maybe because of an intake of mysterious drugs, was capable of amazing physical feats.
