The trailer is fairly tantalizing, I mean who wouldn’t want to hear Jannings’ “Agonized Roar”, and the fact that it’s a Lubitsch film makes it doubly so. But sadly this is all we have left of the film save for some crowd footage that ended up in Josef von Sternberg’s The Scarlet Empress. Here’s hoping someday this one turns up.

Ernst Lubitsch’s So This is Paris stars Monte Blue and Patsy Ruth Miller as a doctor and his wife. The couple is as faithful as the day is long–but when a dance team comprised of Lilyan Tashman and Andre Beranger make the scene, the days grow mighty short. Blue, Miller, Tashman and Berander spend the lion’s share of the film hiding their various peccadilloes from each other. The beauty of the Lubitsch touch is that, while So This is Paris suggests much, there isn’t a single censurable image throughout. Based on a play by Henry Meillac and Ludovic Halevy, this was a favorite of audiences and critics alike.

Set in one of Lubitsch’s hallmark mythical kingdoms, Die Bergkatze [The Mountain-Lion / The Wildcat] finds Lubitsch in exuberantly expressionistic mode, employing a host of optical masks to create perhaps the most visually audacious comic spectacle of his career. Pola Negri plays the daughter of a band of thieves; seduction of army commander (and audience) ensues. Lubitsch’s personal favourite work of all his German films, Die Bergkatze represents a peak in both Lubitsch’s silent oeuvre and the silent cinema as a whole.

The 1,163-meter-long film was examined by the censors in July 1918. The premiere of the film, which was announced in the Lichtbild-Bühne as Der Fall Rosenblum,[4] was on September 20, 1918 at the U.T. Friedrichstraße in Berlin.Der Fall Rosentopf was one of a series of films in which the character of Sally, portrayed by Lubitsch, appeared. This character often came from a small town to a big city as a small apprentice, for example, and subsequently rose through the social ranks. Examples of this are 1916’s Schuhpalast Pinkus with Lubitsch as Sally Pinkus and 1917’s Der Blusenkönig with Lubitsch as Sally Katz. Other characters with the name Sally played by Lubitsch can be found in 1916 in Der G.m.b.H.-Tenor (Sally), 1918 in Der Rodelkavalier (Sally Pinner) and Meyer aus Berlin (Sally Meyer)

In 1919, before Ernst Lubitsch was known for his famous “touch,” the master director made something like nine films–a perfect opportunity for an artist to really practice his craft. Even he had to start somewhere.

Madame du Barry was retitled Passion to avoid the anti-German sentiment after World War I. Even though it was a French title and a French story, in Europe the movie was connected to the German director Ernst Lubitsch. Lubitsch’s name appeared nowhere in the American posters or movie titles so the movie wouldn’t bomb in America.

The great German actress Pola Negri plays the title character, a poor seamstress who becomes the courtesan of King Louis XV (Emil Jannings), and forces him to promote her secret lover to lieutenant in the royal guard so that he will be close to her. The story ends in tragedy for the lovers, but also a Bastille Day triumph.

Though Lubitsch’s famous “touch” is not yet in evidence, he does give a certain lightness to the usually heavy and stuffy costume genre. For decades afterwards, most costume movies would drag along and bore generations of filmgoers who would pretend to be enlightened. This time, there’s no pretending. Part of the reason for this lightness is the stripped-down sets. Lubitsch rarely shows any wide shots of great opulence. But when he does, it counts for more than just showing off.

A great example is in the scene where Negri meets Mr. Dubarry, the man who she will eventually marry. She’s dining with a soldier who is romantically interested in the poor seamstress. Dubarry pays a surprise visit and she hides behind a partition. She attempts to tease and tickle her date without attracting the attention of the unwanted guest. Lubitsch lets the teasing go on for a few minutes before revealing that Dubarry can see the entire episode in a conveniently placed mirror.
