Plot
The serial is set on a remote island in the Caribbean, where reporter Larry Kent (Don Terry) and his enemies search for a lost treasure trove of gold. Kent arrives on the island in search of another reporter who had gone missing. Kent discovers that valuable lost treasure is buried on the island, and finds half of a map which holds a clue to its location. Toni Morrell (Gwen Gaze), the daughter of a shipmate whose murdered partner knew where the treasure was buried, agrees to help Kent investigate his friend’s disappearance and locate the treasure. Morrell and Kent are opposed by a villain named Collins (Walter Miller) who uses his henchmen and supply of weapons and land mines in an attempt to stop them. Kent’s enemy in the film is Dr. X. (Hobart Bosworth) who wears a skull mask and pirate clothing, and is in the process of developing a powerful explosive. Due to the actions of Dr. X., Kent is nearly buried alive, killed with dynamite and slashed in a sword battle. He defeats Dr. X. in the last installment of the serial titled “Justice”.[2][4][5]

One of the last films directed by the great Elmer Clifton, whose career dates back to the mid-teens and D.W.Griffith, The Judge was also the first production of Ida Lupino’s production company, first called Emerald Productions, later called The Filmmakers.

This is a quirky film which is both hard-boiled and pretentious, raw and artsy. It is also a film that raises as many questions as it answers. Elements are introduced into the story, covered in detail, and then not developed. Dream sequences are introduced, but are unclear. The main character–who is a sleazy defense attorney, NOT a judge–is well-played by Milburn Stone, but his story is not really typical of anyone other than this one oddball character. Why the film is called THE JUDGE, I don’t know. The show begins and ends with a judge pulling out a file from his file cabinet, and talking about what a unique and disturbing case this was. The same judge does rule on an important case in the film, but he is not central–one wonders why the film is not called THE DEFENSE ATTORNEY? While star Milburn Stone and some of the supporting actors give good performances, the doctor and Stone’s wife are both amateurishly played. Also, no scored instrumental music is feature in the film: only avant-garde acapella choral music, and the wire recording of the violin practicing that is used to get the psycho killer to grab a gun, which is used later as supporting music. This gives the film an art-film feel. A few scenes were unclear and required me to rewind the tape and watch them two or three times. The scene where the guy selling the dolls picks someone’s pocket–the guy who later kills a policeman and is blackmailed by Stone–was unclear. Where was that gun coming from? Is this sloppy continuity, or an attempt at being ambiguous? Who knows… When the film ends, somewhat abruptly I might add, the viewer will probably have a number of questions as we did. However, whatever minor flaws I may complain about, The Judge is a unique film experience. Not entirely successful, but unique nonetheless.

Originally begun as NOT WANTED by low-budget director Elmer Clifton, who almost immediately suffered a heart attack and died soon after, the film was completed by actress Ida Lupino, her first directorial effort (she also co-wrote and co-produced this one). Lupino was a film noir favorite, and would continue acting well into the 1970s, but her short directing career was a first in Hollywood. She was one of the first actors to make the move behind the camera, and was the very first actress to direct her own feature-length film. She wouldn’t discuss this film too openly over the years, considering its taboo subject matter, but her subsequent offerings, OUTRAGE and THE HITCH-HIKER, were milestones in 1950s cinema. Her work as a director was usually restricted to episodes of early TV series, but in her debut film, Lupino does a great job and it’s easy to see she had what it takes to take control of directing a film. The history of WRONG RUT is almost as interesting as the film itself; its original release as NOT WANTED was critically but not financially successful, but enterprising roadshow producer Jack Lake grabbed a number of prints, injected new square-up crawls and color Caesarian childbirth footage, chopped off the opening and end credits, and under the titles SHAME, STREETS OF SIN, and THE WRONG RUT, transformed the independent wonder into a popular exploitation attraction.
