The wild and wanton Francisca, known as the “The Tigress,” is the eldest of three sisters, who are bosses of a farm in Ecuador. A medicine man tells Francisca and Juliana that their youngest sister Sara must remain a virgin to protect their land. A travelling salesman, engaged to Sara, tells the police that she is being kept locked up by her older sisters.

Alba is eleven years old and terribly shy. The fact that she gets nosebleeds at inconvenient moments doesn’t help. To make matters worse, when her ailing mother is hospitalised she is dumped with her eccentric father Igor, who she never knew and of whom she is very ashamed. Very slowly and cautiously, the father and daughter get to know each other. Alba is a coming-of-age film that is both heart-rending and unsentimental. It’s striking that such a mature and powerful debut comes from Ecuador, the country that until the beginning of this century had only made one film a year. Young leading actress Macarena Arias is one to keep an eye on. She manages to use a minimum of dialogue to devastating effect.

“On January 8, 1988, when I was ten years old, my parents decided to go on vacation and leave me with my brothers Santiago and Andrés who were 17 and 14 years old. That day I went to a friend’s birthday party and they were to pick me up in the afternoon. Night fell and dawn found me still waiting and watching at the window. They never arrived.”

Yambo is the name of the lake, two hours from Quito, where the bodies of Santiago and Andrés Restrepo where dumped after their disappearance, kidnap and torture by Ecuadorian police in 1988. 1988 was the year when governmental power shifted from the authoritarian social Christian León Febres Cordero to the left democrat Rodrigo Borja Cevallos.

The documentary is Fernanda Restrepo’s elegiac search for the memory of her brothers and a celebration of life and resistance. Con mi corazón en Yambo is a gripping visual and aural search into the family’s photo albums, home videos, newspaper clippings and phone call recordings (including those with police infiltrator Doris Morán), as well as into Ecuadorian Police Department archives and national television records.
