There can be little doubt that Waiting for Heaven ranks as one of the most important works of Turkish cinema. Here is a film that stands out for its unique story and visual richness, its original themes and multi-layered, poetic narrative.
The central character of Waiting for Heaven is Eflatun, a miniaturist… Set in the 17th century, the film uses Eflatun’s personal story as a springboard for exploring a multiplicity of themes including the identity of the artist, the relationship between art and reality, the period of history in question and the struggle for power. One of the main topics of discussion raised by the film is the strained relationship between the arts, the artist and government. But what constitutes the real axis of the film, couched in the story of the miniaturist, is an exploration of representational art, one of the major areas of crossover in the art and culture of East and West; and a study of the meaning inherent in these two very different art traditions.

Waiting for Heaven is rich in themes and areas of discussion. The themes of Zaim’s film, each masterfully handled, are translated into the language of cinema through a multi-dimensional narrative. But as much as its wealth of themes, the film is dazzling for its many visual dimensions, clearly the product of much skilled work. Through its multi-layered structure the film does more than transport the audience to a different time; it also brings to the screen the visually problematic areas of representational art and east-west traditions thanks to a wealth of meticulous and expedient effects. The film is a canvas for presenting and discussing the documentary, representative and analytical qualities of western art, as contrasted with the mythical and narrative attributes of its eastern counterpart. In addition to all this, there is the immensely visual story of the artist as an individual, his dreams and his memories, the most fundamental element of consciousness.
Waiting for Heaven stands out as a highly unusual and original piece of Turkish cinema. This outstanding film ranks without doubt as an important addition to world, as well as Turkish, cinema.

Turkish Cypriot filmmaker Derviş Zaim’s most recent directorial effort, “Gölgeler ve Suretler” (Shadows and Faces) in which he tackles the inter-communal violence his homeland experienced in the 1960s, through the story of a father and daughter.

Shadow and Faces is the coming-of-age story of a young girl who is separated from her father, a Karagöz shadow play master, during the beginning of the conflict between Turks and Greeks in Cyprus in 1963. With a backdrop of extraordinary natural beauty, the experiences of the villagers fleeing from their village in the Island’s Karpas region to the relatively secure but alienating city sheds light on the story of Cyprus.

How can a man protect his family without resorting to crime, in the midst of unspeakable violence? How can he maintain his innocence and human dignity in a world where violence and injustice reign supreme? Inspired by a real story in a very specific moment in history, the film explores questions relevant to us all. (—Antalya International Film Festival)

Somersault in a Coffin (Turkish: Tabutta Rövaşata) is a 1996 Turkish film, written and directed by Derviş Zaim, about a homeless criminal and car thief. The film, which was released on November 15, 1996, received awards at several international film festivals including the Golden Orange for best film at the Antalya International Film Festival.

Mahsun, thief with an unalterably bad reputation. There is almost no car he can’t steal, no lock he can’t open. He brings at dawn the cars that he has stolen them. He even washes them clean. However what he does can not be considered only as enjoying himself with a drive. Stealing cars is a way fro him to shelter from the cold winter. Because this thief neither has a place to stay nor a proper job. That’s why his shortcut to get over with winter is to get in prison as soon as possible. But, as he is notorious with even robbing the prison he was serving time in, no judge wants to see his face and no prison accepts him. And one day, this starved and contemporary Charlot falls in love with a girl, a heroin addict. “Somersault In A Coffin” aims to underline the taut unity of possibilities and impossibilities about human beings. That’s because mankind is endowed with the capacity of not only establishing the balance of life under the most suitable conditions, but also refusing any balance they have established and not to accept what is rational and suitable for themselves.
