David Lean - Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Lawrence, a lieutenant in the British Army, is asked by Colonel Brighton to moderately assess Faisal, their ally. Lawrence is impressed with Faisal and seeks his help to plan an attack on the enemy.

Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote:
David Lean’s 1962 spectacle about T.E. Lawrence’s military career between 1916 and ’18, written by Robert Bolt and produced by Sam Spiegel, remains one of the most intelligent, handsome, and influential of all war epics. Combining the scenic splendor of De Mille with virtues of the English theater, Lean endeared himself to English professors and action buffs alike. The film won seven Oscars, including best picture and direction, yet the ideological crassness of De Mille and most war movies isn’t so much transcended as given a high gloss: the film’s subject is basically the White Man’s Burden—despite ironic notations—with Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, and Omar Sharif called upon to represent the Arab soul, and Jose Ferrer embodying the savage Turks. The all-male cast helps make this one of the most homoerotic of all screen epics, though the characters’ sexual experiences are at best only hinted at.

Plot / Synopsis
In the midst of World War II, the renowned playwright Noël Coward engaged a young film editor named David Lean to help him realize his vision for an action drama about a group of Royal Navy sailors (roles that would be filled by Coward himself, Bernard Miles, and John Mills, among others) fighting the Germans in the Mediterranean. Coward and Lean ended up codirecting the large-scale project—an impressive undertaking, especially considering that neither of them had directed for the big screen before (this would be Coward’s only such credit). Cutting between a major naval battle and flashbacks to the men’s lives before they left home, In Which We Serve (an Oscar nominee for best picture) was a major breakthrough for both filmmakers and a sensitive and stirring piece of propaganda.

Based on Noël Coward’s play “Still Life,” Brief Encounter is a romantic, bittersweet drama about two married people who meet by chance in a London railway station and carry on an intense love affair. Sentimental yet down-to-earth and set in pre-World War II England, the film follows British housewife Laura Jesson (Celia Johnson), who is on her way home, but catches a cinder in her eye. By chance, she meets Dr. Alec Harvey (Trevor Howard), who removes it for her. The two talk for a few minutes and strike immediate sparks, but they end up catching different trains. However, both return to the station once a week to meet and, as the film progresses, they grow closer, sharing stories, hopes, and fears about their lives, marriages, and children. One day, when Alec’s train is late, both become frantic that they will miss each other. When they finally find each other, they realize that they are in love. But what should be a joyous realization is fraught with tragedy, since both care greatly for their families. Howard and Johnson give flawless performances as two practical, married people who find themselves in a situation in which they know they can never be happy.

Quote:
Based on the book by Charles Dickens Great Expectations (1946) tells the story of a young boy by the name of Pip (Antony Wager/John Mills) who lives in the British countryside with Joe Gargery (Bernard Miles), a poor blacksmith, and his bossy wife Mrs. Joe Gargery (Freda Jackson). They reside in a rundown house not too far from the local cemetery.

One night Pip decides to visit the grave of his mother. He wishes to place some flowers on it. In the cemetery he encounters two convicts – the first one Abel Magwitch (Finlay Currie) asks him for some food, the second one (George Hayes) runs away. Pip goes back to his home and later on returns with a pork pie and a bottle of brandy. On the following night the convict is captured by the authorities.

In the meantime Pip is asked to visit the home of Miss Havisham (Martita Hunt), an old and extravagant lady, who lives in a large gothic house on the opposite side of the village. The house has known better days but nowadays it is nearly ruined by the moist and ghusty winds coming from the nearby ocean. The only other person living with Miss Havisham is a young and beautiful girl by the name of Estella (Valerie Hobson).

Pip arrives at the house and quickly falls for the lovely Estella. Unfortunately, she is extremely cold to him. Unshaken Pip keeps coming back, as requested by Miss Havisham, hoping that one day Estella will warm to him. Eventually, she allows Pip to give her a friendly kiss.

Soon after, however, Pip is told by Miss Havisham that Estella will be sent to Paris where she is expected to become a lady. Pip is heartbroken.

A few years later Pip is visited by a lawyer from London. He is informed that someone has decided to adopt him. Pip is also told that he is expected to relocate to London where he must learn proper manners and become a gentleman. Shocked Pip heads to Miss Havisham’s house to bid her goodbye. Then he moves to London.

With the help of his best friend Herbert Pocket (Alec Guinness) Pip becomes a gentleman. During a short trip to the countryside he stops by Miss Havisham’s house to express his gratitude for her financial support and ask about Estella. He is convinced that Miss Havisham is his anonymous adopter. But Pip is told a different story. He returns to London where a letter from New South Wales awaits him.

A superb adaptation of Charles Dickens book Great Expectations is regarded by many as David Lean’s true masterpiece. Some may conclude that this is a rather unusual claim given that the British director is also responsible for the much better received and highly-decorated Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai. I however tend to agree – Great Expectations captures the spirit of Dickens unlike any other film adaptation that I have ever seen. It is truly the creation of a man with an unstoppable imagination.

The film’s greatest strength undoubtedly stems from its ability to mix drama with social critique in a manner largely unseen prior to 1947. Lean spends a great deal of time emphasizing the strengths and weaknesses of his characters as well as the impact the environment they belong to has on them. For example the character transformation Pip undergoes from his early years in the village to his maturation as a gentleman in London is truly fascinating. And so is Lean’s depiction of the social barriers dividing the British society.

Strictly as an entertainment piece Great Expectations is as good as cinema could be. Its brilliant atmospheric composition allows for some incredibly moving visuals. Pip’s first encounter with the convict at the cemetery is both frightening and mysterious at the same time. It creates that special literary feeling that only reading a book could produce.

In this adaptation made during the the London Blitz of George Bernard Shaw’s edgy comedy of the same name, Wendy Hiller as the idealistic title character is running a Salvation Army shelter in the East End that aims to save the souls of the destitute while preserving their physical well-being. She becomes engaged to the sceptical, unworldly Adolphus Cusins (Rex Harrison), a professor of Ancient Greek who discards his agnosticism and joins the Salvation Army to be near his fiancee. Cusins is then startled to learn that Major Barbara in fact comes from a privileged background – she is the grand-daughter of an earl on her mother’s side, and her long-absent estranged father Andrew Undershaft (a young Robert Morley) is a multi-millionaire arms manufacturer.

Undershaft is a self-made cynic, a man who relies on his intelligence and wealth to overawe others. When invited to resume contact with his wife and children to help with the family finances, he becomes convinced that Barbara is wasting her abilities in evangelising to the poor, and seeks to overturn her belief system. For her part, Barbara is fascinated by her father yet appalled that his fortune has been built out of violence and destruction. But when Undershaft makes a large and much-needed donation to the Salvation Army that Barbara’s superiors have no hesitation in accepting, he succeeds in challenging his daughter’s principles and undermining her loyalties. At the same time, Cusins is finding Undershaft’s philosophical stance strangely congenial…
