Nina Chaparro and Margarita Martinez on Cine-Mujer: Cine-Mujer was a feminist film collective from the 1980s in Colombia. Through film, they told us stories of invisible women who, from the margins, made small revolutions. Clara Riascos was one of its members. With sharp plots, details that capture the viewer and a delicate humor in each of her shots, she tells us how they revolutionized Colombian cinema to bring women to the screen. Clara tells us that the Cine-Woman group began with the meeting between filmmakers Eulalia Carrizosa and Sarah Bright when they made Carmen Carrascal. “It was not only the art of making a film but the meeting between two women and feminism”. Then Luz Fanny Tobón, Dora Cecilia Ramírez, Patricia Retrepo and Clara joined the group. At that time feminism exploded: women felt more confident to speak out and feminist groups began to multiply throughout the country. “Cine-Mujer was an audiovisual support for the struggles that women were giving for their rights,” she says. Clara sums up that moment in one word: amazing. “We decided that we would all do everything. Camera, editing, script, photography, everything. It was a laboratory in which we learned a lot, so some things are well-intentioned but not perfect. We made an effort to make films but we had to give it up because it was too expensive. Then the government began to hire us to make materials on the subject of women, because we were the ones who knew. Why portray the everyday life of invisible women? Why pay attention to the story of the housewife, the woman who makes baskets to feed her children, or the woman who lives in an invaded neighborhood? What do these stories tell us? Cine-Mujer is a call to pay attention to everyday life: to how the work done daily by a housewife is not thought of or treated as such; to how a poor woman must bear not only the burdens of an abusive husband, but also those of the daily struggle to give a dignified life to her children; to how, ultimately, women fight daily battles in the midst of adverse contexts.
