Lo que le pasó a Santiago aka What Happened to Santiago (1989) is directed by Jacobo Morales, Puerto Rico’s most prominent director. It is the first (and so far only) Puerto Rican film to be nominated for an Academy Award for best Foreign Language Picture and, at the time of this upload, the earliest Puerto Rican movie on KG.

Plot Summary
Santiago Rodríguez has been an accountant for 40 years. He’s a simple man, a widower, overwhelmed by conflicts with his children, and the situation of insecurity and materialism that prevails in his country. His crisis of loneliness is exacerbated when, at the age of 65, he is forced into retirement by the company where he has worked since his youth. In one of his nostalgic walks in the park, he meets Angelina, a woman much younger than him, distinguished looking and enigmatic. They establish a relationship that renews Santiago’s enthusiasm for life. But Angelina avoids talking about her past. Roy is a handsome Surinam man, who studies in Amsterdam. He hurriedly left his Dutch girlfriend Karina to visit his dying mom in Paramaribo. Back in his homeland, Roy soon becomes obsessed with his own country and its culture. When he falls for the Hindu nurse Rubia, the conservative Hindu and Black communities are in revolt. In Jean Gentil, a man looks for a job in a cacophonous city that wouldn’t notice if he had never existed. He’s wearing a tie and the kind of sadness that removes from the face any immediately recognizable expression—the awkward and self-effacing sadness of the unwelcome immigrant. The man (Jean Gentil, playing a filmic version of himself) is an unemployed Haitian polyglot in Santo Domingo with a background in accounting and a tendency to question whether or not he’s even alive. While initially aiming for an office job in line with his experience and goals, he quickly has to settle for a construction job and a hard floor to sleep on after being evicted. He eventually makes his way to the countryside, where he retreats from the unforgiving madness of the big city and, ironically, away from “civilization” he can finally find a place to sleep, something to eat, and water to bathe.

Director/Producer Perry Henzell created one of the most popular films to come out of Jamaica. The Harder They Come was a triumph for the Jamaican culture and it gave an honest look at life within the ghettos of that part of the world. It also became a legendary cult film. Ivan (Jimmy Cliff) is a country boy looking for fame and fortune in the big city of Kingston, Jamaica. He has dreams of becoming a star in the new reggae scene. When Ivan gets to town, he finds out things wont be as easy as he expected. When Ivan visits his mother and she explains that even though he has good intentions hes headed for a rough road ahead. While out looking around town, Ivan meets a local player named Pedro and they get to talking. Pedro sees that Ivan is just a dumb country boy, but after Ivan explains hes a reggae singer, Pedro tells him he’ll try to help him out. Ivan and Pedro and some others go to see a movie. You’ll notice that the movie they are watching in the theater is a classic spaghetti western called Django (1966). The clip shown is when Django is facing off with the red hooded bandits. Ivan and the others are hooting and hollering at Django on the screen. They go crazy when watching this anti-hero blast away with his Gatling gun.

Ivan needs a job, so he walks the streets trying to find work, but hes turned down by everyone. He finally finds a job working for a local preacher as a mechanic. The Preacher is a very serious man and he has strong convictions. Ivan meets one of The Preachers adopted daughters and he asks her to go out with him. She is very religious as well and she and Ivan have a hard time because The Preacher is overprotective. They get to know each other and we see them riding along the oceanside in the sunset, its a really beautifully shot sequence. The Preacher then accuses his daughter of fornicating with Ivan and she cries out that its not true. In a great scene, we see that she is thinking of making love to Ivan while shes in a church service.

Ivan gets a chance to a record a song. Its called “The Harder They Fall” and it serves as his anthem throughout the film. Ivan finds out that selling his song will not gain him alot of money. This is where the film really shows the struggles of the real life reggae artists at the time. They didnt make much money at all for their songs and Ivan is offered only twenty dollars. Ivan is disallusioned by this, but he still manages to get off on the popularity of the song when it plays at local dancehall clubs.

Ivan comes to his girlfriend’s window one night and explains that she has to choose who she wants to live with, him or The Preacher. Ivans goal is to make it as a reggae star and he doesnt want The Preacher or anyone else telling him what to do. Ivan comes to work the next day and finds that he has lost his job. His co worker tells him to leave, but in defiance, Ivan violently stabs him and blood flies everywhere. Ivan’s picked up by the police and brought to jail and whipped. When Ivan gets out, he has a new goal, to stay outside the law and not get caught no matter the cost.

The Harder They Come shows the struggle of the Jamaican people and it also mirrors the hardship of many third world cultures in general. It was filmed with a raw artistic/realistic style and it remains one of the best films of the 1970s. Its a must see for any film lover. Irie!
