During World War II, an intelligence officer is dispatched by the U.S. government to arrange an exchange in Argentina of industrial diamonds needed by the Germans for a secret gyroscope needed by the Allies.

One of four miniseries comprising NBC’s Best Sellers anthology, The Rhinemann Exchange was adapted from the Robert Ludlum novel of the same name. Stephen Collins stars as American intelligence officer David Spaulding, who under cover of his musician father’s concert tours embarks upon a number of fact-finding missions in Europe just before WW2.Once hostilities break out, Spaulding relocates to Aergentina, there to exchange industrial diamonds for a secret gyroscope needed for the American war effort. Naturally, the Nazis are equally interested in those diamonds, putting Spaulding in any number of perilous predicaments. Lauren Hutton costars as Leslie Hawkewood, one of those ravishing “mystery women” so common to espionage fiction. Originally running 5 hours and telecast in three segments on March 10, 17, and 24, 1977, The Rhinemann Exchange was later rebroadcast as a four-hour, two-part “TV movie.”

Taw Jackson (John Wayne) returns from prison having survived being shot, to the ranch and gold that Frank Pierce stole from him. Jackson makes a deal with Lomax (Kirk Douglas), the man who shot him 5 years ago to join forces against Pierce and steal a large gold shipment. The shipments are transported in the War Wagon, an armored stage coach that is heavily guarded. The two of them become the key players in the caper to separate Pierce from Jackson’s gold.

In this comic western, Flagg (Robert Mitchum) is a veteran marshal forced to retire by the pompous Mayor Wilker (Martin Balsam). McKay (George Kennedy) is a wily gunslinger. The two combine forces to stop a young band of outlaws from robbing the train when it pulls into the station. Flagg warns the mayor of the upcoming attempt but is not taken seriously by the town politician. McKay and Flagg ride out to warn the train of the impending crime, which finds McKay facing members of his own gang in a traditional western showdown. David and John Carradine appear in this feature along with Tina Louise and Lois Nettleton.

Two aging bronc-busters (Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda) make their meager money by breaking wild horses. They dream of better days–possibly retiring to some island paradise–but they never put any money in the bank because they spend it all on booze and girls. They think their no-dough days are done until they acquire a wild drunkard horse which they enter in a bucking contest–no one can ride the wild, hiccupping nag. This is a pretty funny ’60s western-style comedy.

The basically plotless movie, soon to become a cult fave, makes up for its slight story by a rich characterization given by its stars Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford as non-heroic flawed cowpokes. It’s a modern western set in the Old West (filmed on location in Arizona’s Coconino National Forest).

Ben Jones (Glenn Ford) and Howdy Lewis (Henry Fonda) are two aging, itinerant bronc-busters who are forever on the verge of settling down. They are weary from always being broke and the two ne’er-do-well cowpokes make a vow to give up carousing and settle down in Tahiti with their savings as horse tamers instead of always working for the stingy and double-crossing rancher Jim Ed Love (Chill Wills). Being broke, they supposedly take one last job with Love, trying to tame a wild stallion who refuses to be broken named Ol’ Fooler. Unable to break the stallion, they grudgingly accept him as partial payment for their winter’s work. They then go off rounding up strays for the winter in the New Mexico hills and trade him to moonshiner Vince Moore (Edgar Buchanan) for a bottle of whiskey. When the moonshiner discovers the horse has a hankering for corn mash (just like this film), he returns him to the cowpokes. In due time, the cowboys come to admire the stubborn horse and scheme to enter him as a bucking bronco in a rodeo. This gives them the chance to meet two Las Vegas sisters (Sue Ann Langdon & Hope Holiday) who are chorus gals, and the boys forget all their vows and start messing around with the strippers. The horse also lives up to his rep as not to be tamed, but comes down with a fatal injury. When the decision to shoot the horse is made, Ol’ Fooler rears up and destroys the vet’s barn. The forlorn cowpokes use all their wages to pay for the damage and return with Ol’ Fooler to desperately apply for another job from Jim Ed Love.

This was a sleeper film that the studio put on the second bill of a double feature with the top billing inane musical romance film Get Yourself a College Girl, not realizing it had a winner with this agreeable film. The studio never knew how to market The Rounders, but Fonda fans discovered the film and brought it back to life from the dead. It even inspired a short-lived TV series with the same title. Its wry humor, however, soon becomes tiresome and the sentimentality surrounding the horse threw me off it. But it’s beautifully shot and as easy to watch as catching a Las Vegas stripper in her act, and you never mind too much that nothing much happens.
