Two men on an epic quest have endured some of the worst things possible that can be done to them. One guy gets a spear through his cheek, another gets stabbed in both of his legs by a spear which causes him to walk with crutches for awhile. Then one gets a beetle in his ear and has to have wax heated up and poured in it, then it looked like he stabbed the beetle in his ear. One has to have some of his leg cut off due to walking too much. One got attacked by a lion and almost gotten eaten. People have never lived until they have done an experience like this. These two men have endured a very rough friendship together to find what they are looking for.

In this offbeat comedy, Jeff Bridges plays Craig Blake, a rich kid who works with a group of hard-living Southern real-estate men led by Jabo (Joe Spinell), who are buying up a business district in Birmingham, Alabama in order to clear the space and put in a new project. Craig is supposed to work out a deal to buy the Olympic Spa, a gym popular with local weight-lifters, but after spending some time at the club, Craig finds himself fascinated with the people there, especially Joe Santo (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a world-class body builder from Austria who sometimes works out in a superhero costume and likes to play bluegrass fiddle to relax. Craig also makes the acquaintance of Mary Tate Farnsworth (Sally Field), a feisty gal who hangs out with Joe. Mary Tate finds Craig attractive, but she isn’t sure he’s being all that sincere, and she wonders why a wealthy real estate man is hanging out with a bunch of low-rent gym rats. Stay Hungry was a critical comeback for director Bob Rafelson and kick-started the careers of both Sally Field and Arnold Schwarzenegger in their first major film roles (unless you count Arnold’s misbegotten appearance as “Arnold Strong” in Hercules In New York).

Synopsis
A huge bath showroom. Brass fixtures along the walls, sink and showers, enameled toilets, jacuzzi tubs, steam showers, all polished and gleaming. Saleswomen and salesmen move uneasily amongst the customers. Hardly anyone can afford the prices. The sales people are energetic but it’s hopeless. They haven’t made a sale in weeks. The manager Bruce, about 35, oversees the bustle. He’s charming, well built. supercilious – and desperate to boost business.
Davida. late 20’s, enters just before closing time. Bruce senses she is a buyer. Well dressed and confident. Not the average family woman on a tight budget. He moves in. Davida needs a tub and she needs it fast. But she wants to fill one of the baths with water and step in. Not possible. There are rules – hygiene regulations. You can demonstrate the jets in a working tub. You can try out a dry tub. But you can’t get in a full bath tub! Health department forbids; insurance forbids. They talk. Davida isn’t sure. This is a substantial
investment. She needs a tub for two. If she can’t try it out she will shop elsewhere. Bruce relents. It’s after hours. For this beauty he will make an exception. But is the tub big enough for two? He demonstrates. After hours. After dark. A deal is made.

Bob Rafelson – Director
Born in New York City in 1933, Bob Rafelson is a compulsive drifter and a Hollywood maverick. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he started writing for television, adapting stage productions for “Play of the Week” With Bert Schneider and Steve Blauner, he formed BBS Productions, the company which produced such hits as EASY RIDER and TILE LAST PICTURE SHOW. Rafelson made his directorial debut with HEAD, a rock film featuring the Monkees. Two years later, he made FIVE EASY PIECES, which won him the best director award from the New York Film Critics. Running in from seemingly nowhere, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith & Peter Tork – better known collectively as The Monkees – disrupt a bridge opening ceremony. From where and why did they come to disrupt the proceedings? They were filming a series of vignettes in several different genres, including a wild west sequence, a desert war sequence, a Confederate war sequence, and a science fiction sequence. They disagree with much of what is happening around them, and try to figure out how to escape the oppression they feel – symbolized by a big black box in which they are seemingly imprisoned – by the forces around. That oppression is often shown in the form of “The Big Victor Mature”.
