1971. Brassy and beautiful prostitute Sade (a delightfully sassy and sultry performance by luscious blonde Chris Cassidy) lives on an island during the Vietnam War. Sadie’s life gets turned topsy turvy with the arrival of devout Christian Senator Daniels (a perfectly uptight and robust portrayal by Joseph Darling), who makes it his mission in life to save Sadie’s wicked soul.

Director Bob Chinn ably crafts a compelling and claustrophobic chamber piece that’s not only rich in groovy early 70’s period atmosphere, but also packs an unexpectedly strong dramatic punch thanks to the surprisingly substantial script, well drawn characters, and plenty of snappy dialogue. Moreover, it’s acted with zest by a capable cast, with especially stand-out contributions by Jerome Daniels as dashing stud Jack, Gary Eberhart as the easygoing Bear ((Eberhart also composed the right-on funky’n’folksy score), Deborah Sullivan as the repressed Mrs. Daniels, Diana Holt as the sweet and virginal Honore, Elmo Lavino as amiable bartender Doc, and Larry Price as slick hustler Harry. Ken Gibb’s sharp cinematography provides a neat polished look. Recommended viewing for both Chinn fans and 80’s porn aficionados alike.

Former Playboy model Gail Palmer granted her “real world credibility” to the adult industry by producing and on occasion allegedly directing (as in the case of the CANDY movies with Carol Connors) several high profile, big budget porn epics as the swinging ’70s gave way to the egotistical ’80s. Many of these were made – regardless of what the credits sometimes claimed – by veteran filmmaker Bob Chinn, who had put the formidable John C. Holmes through his paces in the long-running JOHNNY WADD series, showing the ropes to an up ‘n’ coming acolyte named Jeffrey Fairbanks. The latter would of course go on to helm his own line of instant classics away from his mentors including American PIE, EXPOSED and the vastly underrated WILD DALLAS HONEY. Released through Chinn’s production and distribution company Caribbean Films, the aforementioned CANDY comedies and the Seka/John Holmes vehicle PRISONER OF PARADISE were obviously intended to be the blockbusters right from the start. The strangely sluggish saga of a South Seas whorehouse run by maternal madam Georgina Spelvin, TROPIC OF DESIRE was perhaps the only outright bomb they ever inflicted upon unsuspecting audiences. These headliners were supported by a whole slew of sleepers, the popularity of which has often proved far more enduring than that of their more bountiful brethren. Once again asserting that erotic evaluation is a highly personal matter, I would like to present my case for HOT LEGS as the cream of that crop.

The plot is mercifully simple and falls squarely into the “fun ‘n’ fluff” category with beleaguered advertising executive Mort (expertly essayed by a suitably hopped up Richard Pacheco a/k/a “Dewey Alexander”) doing his darnedest to beat the deadline on the Hot Legs pantyhose campaign. Of course, everyone gets in the way, making for the movie’s superbly staged and – in my not so humble opinion – extremely erotic sex scenes. Model Jesie St. James (the late Sam Weston’s favorite actress) gets the ball rolling by being late for a photo shoot, courtesy of Blair Harris (Serena’s Limo liaison from Tom Janovich’s SMALL TOWN GIRLS, billed here as “David Blair”) and his impressive lovemaking skills. Though I’m a gay man and should therefore have no logical use for such shenanigans, I’ve always considered Jesie particularly effective in same sex encounters (ah, perhaps this is starting to make sense after all) and she certainly doesn’t disappoint in her delicious duet with lovely Lisa Sue Corey from Chinn’s TELEFANTASY and the orgy finale in Alex De Renzy’s PRETTY PEACHES. Classy brunette Delania Raffino, an accomplished actress in Weston’s EXPECTATIONS and Alex De Renzy’s SUMMER IN HEAT, is pretty much wasted here as the proprietress of the Hot Legs company in the film’s single throwaway nookie number with sailboat captain Jon Martin. Genre mainstay Sharon Kane, whose career has now officially exceeded the three decade (!) mark, fares way better in a romantic fantasy with photographer Paul Thomas, a sequence singled out by late carnal critic Jim Holliday as the most tender and loving sex scene ever captured on film…and I’m not about to argue with my spiritual mentor on that one ! A disco Rollerblade fantasy all but screams out its ’70s origins, and has therefore secured its everlasting place in the heart and mind of this old codger, the guy easily identifiable as notoriously switch-hitting stud R.J. Reynolds, paired with little-seen performer Penelope Jones in her only hetero footage. She did a Sapphic scene with Tina Marie (a/k/a “Victoria Jackson”) in Edwin Brown’s NAUGHTY GIRLS NEED LOVE TOO. Having successfully solved his advertising woes (including a “Why, Miss Jones” moment involving his bespectacled blonde secretary), Pacheco brings up the rear with the type of friendly f*ck he was famous for with sympathetic make-up girl Laurien Dominique, the late lamented star of Stu Segal’s fan favorite SUMMER SCHOOL.

HOT LEGS typifies the kind of adult movie that separates the true aficionado from the umbrage-taking apologist. Sure, it has a cute little – though as predictable as any cable fodder – story that keeps the action moving at near break-neck speed and production values befitting its makers’ lofty reputations. The brightly colored hues conjured up by the late Ken Gibb’s expert cinematography pop right off the screen. Yet it’s clearly the sex and the legendary people having it that ultimately push this unassuming little gem through the roof, with everything else like goofy dialog and breezy sight gags primarily there to enhance the enjoyment for the more discerning dirty movie devotee.

Evil scientist Dr. Paul Severin (well played to the sinister hilt by Alain Patrick) runs a crime ring in which women are kidnapped so they can be drugged and hypnotized into becoming both lethal assassins and obedient sex slaves. It’s up to determined detective Steve Blake (a fine and likeable performance by the always reliable John Leslie) to take Severin’s operation down.

Director Bob Chinn relates the enjoyable and engrossing story at a constant pace, makes nice use of various San Francisco locations, and delivers several explicit and arousing sex scenes complete with hot amplified breathing and moaning. Michael Klinger’s compact script offers a pleasing mix of moody noir and seedy hardcore elements. David Stern’s polished cinematography gives this picture a satisfying bright look and even boasts a few striking shots of people reflected in Severin’s silver mirror sunglasses. Moreover, Leslie registers as a sturdy and effective hero, Tanya Shea contributes a sweet and appealing portrayal as Blake’s loyal sister Karen, and Turk Lyon and Ken Scudder are appropriately slimy as a pair of sadistic flunkies. The bevy of luscious ladies provides plenty of extra sizzle: Black beauty Desiree West, yummy blonde Enjil von Bergdorfe, attractive Vicky Lyon, foxy Laura Bourbon, slender Veronica Taylor, and fetching Sharon Thorpe. Chinn pops up in a small role as a helpful doctor. Recommended viewing for fans of quality 70’s Golden Age adult cinema fare.

Synopsis
Perhaps the boldest of the early sex documentaries, The History of Pornography is a comprehensive view of graphic depictions of sex in art and literature from ancient times onward.

That most of the film’s running time is dedicated to hardcore film loops provides our first clue that The History Of Pornography was not intended for collegiate-level classes in art appreciation.

Eastern erotic art soon gives way to 1960s Danish porn magazines, leading up to the history of hardcore sex in cinema. Tantalizing excerpts from the rare Argentinean stag reel El Satario (The Satyr, ca. 1907-1912) and the infamous fifties’ loop The Nun’s Story logically spill into split beaver loops (easy Bucky!) and explicit threesomes with horny, tattooed revelers.

Look for Flesh Gordon star SUZANNE FIELDS (a.k.a. Cindy Stokes) in a brief cameo with a giant black dildo.

Narrated by porn director BOB (Tropic of Passion) CHINN (who in all likelihood was hiding behind the phony Scandinavian director’s credit), The History of Pornography is as factually accurate as it is graphic.

In fact, Bucky feels compelled to warn you that this one may melt your VCR!

Here’s Chinn’s recollection of it from a 2008 interview with mrskin.com :

“There have been a lot of movies made and books written about the Golden Age of Porn, but they usually start around the time of Deep Throat. And yet you made a movie called The History of Pornography under the name Höns Wegmunsen way back in 1970. What’s the story behind that?

We were making 16mm movies for the storefronts, but they were softcore. Then a documentary called Pornography in Denmark or something came out and you could see actual penetration on the screen.

And I thought, “If they can get away with it, we can.” So we proposed the idea to Canyon Films. What we did was primarily photograph a lot of still pictures and stuff like that but we added a couple of hardcore loops to see if we could get away with it. This was before they were really showing hardcore on screen. And we did get away with it, under the guise of a documentary.

So we quickly followed up with something called Sexus in Paradise. The owner of Canyon Films had a lot of Hawaii footage because he shot surfing films. So we had a lot of Hawaii footage, which we put together with some loops, and we got away with that too!

From then on, we were making hardcore films”
