Synopsis:The Oscar for Glass was really the result of a film commission. I was given a commission to make an half hour film, in black and white about the glass making process. (“Over glas gesproken”, a simple, tradtitional but beautiful documentary.We came across a machine,and it was really clever, like the one with little grips that picked up a bottle and set it gently down elsewhere. Back again, another one, and that went wrong. That was funny to see, all of a sudden it was a stupid machine but for the sake of the factory I couldn’t show stupid machines. It couldn’t stay in. So I decided to make a film in colour for myself. I didn’t want any commentary in it and only jazz music played by Pim Jacobs. And that’s how it ended up.

Synopsis:
Doctor Kees Pulder is unexpectedly visited by his old study pal Hans van Inge Liedaerd. They recall youth memories until they’re totally boogaloo. The next morning, Pulder discovers that Hans left quietly and stole his medicines, including a bulk of morphine. In the evening a brick is thrown through the window with a note from Hans. Not long after, Hans dies from an overdosis. Following his funeral, Pulder gets under the spell of Hans’ past. He meets one of his old lovers, Mies, who tells him they were planning on committing suicide together. Pulder starts visiting Mies regularly. In the end they sow poppies in her backyard, with the juice of which Mies wanted to kill herself. For Kees, it’s still not too late.

Brilliant movie from the lower countries!

This movie is about a brass band in the fictional place of Brederwiede. When they want to compete in a competition the band splits up in two, because the two lead men in the band can’t agree on the music. Both of them go to the narrator, who is the most intelligent person in town. He composes two separate pieces of music which at the competition will become one piece of music. Very clever done! There is also a love story in this movie: the boy and girl are both children of one of the band leaders. Highlight of the movie is the competition itself when the two pieces of music are combined by a planned coincidence. I saw this film before the very funny Brassed Off. It has got similarities and makes watching these movies even more fun.
