Synopsis
It’s a docudrama with a poetic writing and non-linear narrative. Specifically, it’s an “etnofiction”: it portrays the typical characters of Terra Fria, the Northeast of Portugal, showing secular habits in a majestic rural ambience. It’s one of the works that representes the New Cinema (Novo Cinema) Portuguese movement, and one of the first Portuguese docudramas.

It is presumed to have been commissioned by the Cávado Hydroelectric Plant, as it reveals various aspects of the construction of the dam network in that river basin.

The world, life and work of Jaime Fernandes, a peasant born in Barcos (Beira Baixa, Portugal), who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia at the age of 38 and interned in a sanatorium in Lisbon, Hospital Miguel Bombarda, where he died at the age of 69. When he was 65-years-old he started to paint and during the short period of life-time until his death he made a brilliant pictorial work, influenced by the social environment and the sanatorium daily-life.

In conjunction with Margarida Cordeiro, Portuguese filmmaker António Reis made feature films attempting to fathom the “real culture” of their native land. The result was four beautifully photographed, almost dialog-free works in which the land itself took precedence over traditional notions of narrative. Most of these naturalistic, experimental stories were designed to contrast the pastoral beauty found in the mundane activities of rural women to the frenetic, male-dominated lives of those living in filthy, over- mechanized cities. Before entering the film industry, Reis had established himself as a noted, self-taught artist and poet. His interest in film began in the late 1950s when Reis collaborated with the Group of Experimental Cinema of the Cineclube do Porto to makeAuto da Floripes/The Floripes Play (1959). He then made two short documentaries in the early ’60s. Through the decade, Reis occasionally lectured at the Escola de Cinema at the Conservatório Nacional. Reis teamed up with psychiatrist Margarida Codeiro in the early ’70s. They made their first film together, Jaime in 1973.

SYNOPSIS
In those days … The legend of milk in the dark house. Interior time. Almost silence. Light. The natural timeless exterior house. Winter. (Three generations: a grandmother, a scientist son who lives in town and on vacation in the village, two children – grandson and granddaughter. Harmonia only broken by the death of Ana ..).

SOME REMARKS
Using excerpts of poems by Rainer Maria Rilke and other texts by Antonio Reis and Margarida Cordeiro, “Ana”, like “Trás-os-Montes” deeply impressed international critics and received the Golden Spike on the Great Prize Film Festival of Valladolid in 1982, and a Special Mention in the International Festival of Figueira da Foz, in 1982. Also participated, among others, at festivals in Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam, Hong Kong, Montreal, Chicago, Brussels, Hamburg, Los Angels, São Paulo, Manheim, Edinburgh, Lausanne, Geneva, La Rochelle, Locarno (movie of the year, 1983) and Rimini (best films of Europe, 1985). It was selected for the Awards René Clair (1983) and David di Donatello (1983). It also joined the program the week of Cahiers du Cinema (1983).
In 1985 it received the Se7e Awards for Best Direction, Best Cinematography – Acacio de Almeida and Elso Roque, Actress and Revelation – Ana Maria Martins Guerra (in real life mother of Margaret Cook). In 1985, also received the Award for Best New People Director, Actress Revelation – Ana Maria Martins Guerra and Revelation Actor – Manuel Ramalho Eanes.
Debuted commercially in Portugal, the Peaks Forum, 6 May 1985. This premiere was surrounded by controversy: the Commission for Quality Film, an organization created in 1981 to give the domestic and international films of the words “film quality”, refused by the majority distinguish “Ana” with such reference, generating an petition with many people of Portuguese culture. In Paris it was on display for three months and was also distributed commercially in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.
