Plot Summary:
Joe Spencer, a member of a motorcycle gang, is taking a shower. After his bout with personal hygiene, Joe encounters Andy Warhol’s “superstars,” who engage him in conversation. The superstars crack jokes he doesn’t understand and continually correct his poor pronunciation in an attempt to deflate his machismo. In response to these provocations, Joe becomes more obscene and more boasting, but ultimately, he cannot compete with the put-downs that are part of the put-on performances of the Warhol superstars, who prevail over him in the end. Imdb User Comment:First he’s seen as meat on a stick, a himbo lathering up in a shower that’s punctuated by pip-pip-pop strobe edits shoving bits of his lummoxy body in our face. Then this guy, a guido-y wannabe biker dude, seems like more of an unconscious-hustler type (like the young dude in MY HUSTLER), gets turned loose on the Factory gang. First he becomes less than a pornographic object of desire: his meanness, his homophobic bullying, his self-satisfaction with his own unapparent cleverness all make him distasteful–the rough trade Andy brought to the party who then spoiled it for everyone. Then we get to know him better, hear him talk in depth about himself–and it’s wan stuff about his job history. He comes to seem like a hurtin’, hurt-dealin’, profoundly unreflective guy–someone, to put it delicately, without a lot of resources. But then there are these amazing moments when the Warhol crew is struck dumb by him–either by his crude hostility or by his near-mute, cowlike perceptions that bowl them over in their childish truthfulness. And these druggy sophisticates come to seem suddenly, crashingly vulnerable too. It would be easy to hand all the credit to Paul Morrissey here; his influence is obvious (though the movie is a superior version of later, Morrissey-credited pictures like TRASH and HEAT). But in its biggest, abstractest shapes–the war-dance between looks without brains and brains without looks–it’s quintessentially Warholian.

A high-camp “love story” of an outrageously handsome heroin junkie and his trash-scavenging girlfriend (played by a female impersonator), this film skips from fellatio to seduction to foot fetishism in its attacks on soap opera myths and Hollywood. A playful perversity, an acceptance of the soft underbelly of bourgeois society, a strange poignancy informs this fable of impotence, drugs, and sex. In the climactic love scene, the hero — remaining impotent — suggests to the lusting “girl” — reclining on a rumpled bed among objects gathered from garbage cans — that she use a beer bottle instead; she does, while he solicitously inquires whether she is coming, then holds her hand and promises to do better next time. In a second scene, she accuses him, in rage, of not even letting her “suck” him off. What with an antiwar Welfare worker revealed as a malignant foot fetishist, assorted females as sexual aggressors against the forever innocent male, drug-fixes or penises casually displayed, the mounting intrusions upon the viewers’ value system mark this as a truly seditious work.

Hazel runs a beauty salon out of her house, but makes extra money by providing ruthless women to do hit jobs. K.T. is a parasite, and contacts Hazel looking for work when he runs out of money. She is reluctant to use him for a hit, since she prefers using women, but decides to try him on a trial basis. Meanwhile, the local cop she pays off wants an arrest to make it look like he’s actually doing his job, but she doesn’t want to sacrifice any of her “associates.” Several other side plots are woven in, populated with characters from the sleazy side of life.

MARCH 22, 1965: CASTRO OPENS.

Warhol’s film, The Life of Juanita Castro premiered at the Film-Makers Cinematheque. (DB217) It was filmed at WALDO BALART’s apartment on West 10th Street. RONALD TAVEL wrote the script, inspired by Waldo who also appeared in the film and whose sister had been married to FIDEL CASTRO. Fidel had divorced her just before he became Premier. (POP111)

The Life of Juanita Castro (1965)
THE LIFE OF JUANITA CASTRO was filmed by Andy Warhol in 1965, from a scenario by Ronald Tavel. Described by Village Voice film critic Andrew Sarris as “the only valid statement I have seen on Cuba in the past several years,” it depicted actors designated as Fidel, Juanita, Che and Raul improvising spontaneous responses to a tyrannical director’s instructions for action. After Tavel split from Warhol later that year, he arranged for a live performance of JUANITA CASTRO as one half of the theatrical double bill which launched The Play-House of the Ridiculous-the most transgressively queer underground theatre collective of its day-with costumes designed by the erstwhile filmmaker, Jack Smith. This entirely unrehearsed reconstruction performed by Lucky Pierre, with live video relay, will attempt to re-realise Jonas Mekas’s notion of “expanded cinema.”
