Synopsis:
Enver Hoxha ruled Albania with an iron fist for nearly 40 years and for a long time Albania was the only Maoist regime and by far the most isolationist society in Europe – politically, psychologically and physically. This film is about Colonel Muro Neto, the man Hoxha charged with constructing the bunkers throughout the country which ostensibly protected Albania from its enemies both without and within. He became known as “Kolonel Bunker.”

The title, which translates as “The World,” refers to the cafe-bar where most of the action unfolds. Perched on stilts, with a dilapidated Mercedes on the roof and mint-green walls full of original artwork, Bota is the spot where the hopes and dreams of the three main characters are revealed — and often dashed.

The film was selected as the Albanian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards but it was not nominated.

Bota overlooks a dusty road on the outskirts of a small village, consisting of a few run-down communist-era high-rises. Throughout the film, a running joke sees herds of animals wander by — sheep, cows, even ducks. So little happens in the vicinity that the chief waitress, Juli (Flonja Kodheli), doesn’t even have a cell phone. But in the old times, under the dictator Enver Hoxha, the area housed a penal camp for “enemies of the state,” some of whom were even executed there, and their bodies thrown into the marshes. Now, the construction of a nearby highway creates hope that progress and perhaps even some prosperity may be at hand.

Juli grew up with her great-aunt Noje (Tinka Kurti, the first lady of Albanian cinema), but neither Noje nor Juli’s conniving older cousin, Benni (Artur Gorishti), the owner of Bota, ever discusses family history. Still, Juli and fellow waitress Nora (non-pro Fioralba Kryemadhi, who brings a Marilyn Monroe-like vulnerability and sexuality to the role) feel trapped by the past. They can see the promise of modern Albania, but are somehow unable to find a way to claim their place in it. Meanwhile, slick, polyglot Benni, a generation older than the girls and an opportunist of the first order, is one of the few who found the means to leave the village. Although Noje and Juli don’t realize it yet, his profit comes at their expense. Nora, too, suffers at his hands: She’s his mistress and pregnant with his child.

While the film exudes considerable charm throughout, perhaps the helmers’ most seductive scenes take place during a lively nighttime celebration that Benni hopes will lure investors for Bota. The lensing, editing, performances and music capture a magical, but sadly only momentary sense of potential for the characters.

Low budget movies need something to draw attention to them, lacking big stars and great effects. Slogans has those somethings in spades! We get to know an Albanian teacher arriving at a country school, around 1984. He seems to be a sympathetic guy.

The school seems to be less interested in teaching the children real subjects than pushing communist propaganda down their throats. Much of the week is spent on the hillsides, where the pupils whitewash stones and arrange them into huge letters with slogans like “Long live international Communism”. The slogans can be seen from far off, thus securing that no citizen will be able to avoid them. Unruly teachers and classes are punished with very long sentences! Comic and tragic scenes are plentiful as the people struggle with the whims of the local communist party and the school principal’s unrequited love for one of the female teachers.

Post-war Albanian history is terribly strange, weird and bizarre. Sandwiched between Christian and Moslem influences, this mountaineous country was isolated for a very long time, due to the paranoia of their leader, Enver Hoxha. Sensing enemies (revisionists) all around him, he closed the borders and nixed any international co-operation. This movie gives a fair account of what life must have been like in Albania at the time. It’s well made, a bit on the long side, but still worthwhile for those who seek unusual films.

Koli is living the ideal student life in Tirana, capital city of Albania. He has a beautiful girlfriend, aces his exams and spends his evenings in clubs, on beaches and endless parties.
However his idyllic existence is interrupted by a visit from his step-brother Roku, heralding the death of his wheelchair bound father Fan Franyu. Koli travels by ferry to his old home in the heart of the Albanian country to attend his father’s funeral but his presence quickly erupts a century old blood feud, from which his father was only spared due to a code of honour forbidding vengeance against the disabled.
Shouldering the burden of his grandfather’s crimes, Koli is forced to lie low while his fate is decided by those who believe that “Only blood washes away blood.” Koli bears his position with good grace, taking the time to reconnect with the small town life he left behind and the family he had forgotten.
Alive takes us from an easygoing world without boundaries to one bound by family ties and social obligations. Obligations that Koli can’t escape, no matter how far he runs or how low he lies.
