Jim eventually has another romantic interlude with Judalon and is forced to kill one of her suitors in self-defense. The Mark of Zorro (1920)

Quote:
The Mark of Zorro is a 1920 American silent Western romance film starring Douglas Fairbanks and Noah Beery Sr. This genre-defining swashbuckler adventure was the first movie version of The Mark of Zorro. Based on the 1919 story The Curse of Capistrano by Johnston McCulley, which introduced the masked hero, Zorro, the screenplay was adapted by Fairbanks (as “Elton Thomas”) and Eugene Miller.

Jeffrey Vance, Douglas Fairbanks (2008) wrote:
The Mark of Zorro is a landmark, not only in the career of Douglas Fairbanks, but also in the development of the action-adventure film. With this, his thirtieth motion picture, Fairbanks was transitioning from comedies to the costume films for which he is best remembered. Instead of reflecting the times, The Mark of Zorro offers an infusion of the romantic past with a contemporary flair … Beyond reenergizing his career and redefining a genre, Fairbanks’s The Mark of Zorro helped popularize one of the enduring creations of twentieth-century American fiction, a character who was the prototype for comic book heroes such as Batman.

La leggenda del rubino malese (1985)

Synopsis:
An expedition enters an unexplored jungle to search for a legendary ruby.

Translated Review @filmtv.it by giurista81 wrote:
In 1984, the commercial success of *Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom* renewed Antonio Margheriti’s commitment to closing his derivative trilogy, which began with *Hunters of the Golden Cobra* (1982) and continued with *The Last Hunter* (1984). Giovanni Simonelli was confirmed as the screenwriter, and Luciano Pigozzi, an actor present in many Italian films shot in the Philippines, also returned. Joining the cast compared to the previous adventures were Christopher Connelly and Lee Van Cleef, both in the final years of their lives (they would pass away three and four years later, respectively). Simonelli mixed the adventures of Indiana Jones with jungle-set war movies, which Margheriti was accustomed to making during those years. Like Spielberg’s films, the story is set in the late 1930s in Malaysia. The protagonist is a fraudulent guide, played by the solid Connelly (an American actor who found himself in the circuit of Italian B-action movies), who organizes expeditions for wealthy Americans in search of supposed historical artifacts (actually fakes) hidden in the jungle. He stages chases and attacks by natives, whom he secretly pays to make the missions more thrilling for his clients. Margheriti and Simonelli start with a bang, “Spielberg style,” inserting a prologue that introduces the protagonist and his sidekick (Pigozzi). After the prologue, the actual film begins. “Our guide,” Captain Yankee, is hired for a real expedition that also involves a representative of the U.S. government (a gaunt and rather aged Lee Van Cleef, dressed as a gunslinger). The goal is to retrieve a Malaysian ruby buried with a pirate in a mountain/volcano. Simonelli doesn’t bother with the intricacies of the script. Forget the pseudo-historical subtleties of Indiana Jones. Here, the focus is on action, although the film’s first part isn’t particularly engaging. Walter Patriarca creates beautiful sets among the mountain rocks, with flames bursting from a river infested with oil and fake bats flying to indicate the exit. The film takes off midway and delivers about twenty minutes of high entertainment cinema. Connelly swings on vines from one ledge to another, soaring over a river of fire that burns beneath him, moving through a sort of underground temple where he finds the mummy of a pirate with a sparkling ruby around his neck. Like Indiana Jones, Connelly has to struggle to retrieve the artifact, and once he gets it, he faces betrayals reminiscent of Spielberg’s work.
Unfortunately, the positive momentum of the film is lost quickly, as it returns to the war movie tropes set in the jungle. Notable elements include a child raising cobras as pets, a decapitated head rolling among the rocks (a clear nod to the ending of *Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom*), and many well-crafted explosions with flamethrowers. The presence of bulldozers in 1938 that flatten shrubs and destroy structures, as well as flamethrowers without tanks on the users’ backs, raises some doubts.
The artistic cast is poor, filled with many local actors. The unknown and debuting Marina Costa plays the action-prone woman who ends up working with Connelly as she owns a museum. She gets into all sorts of trouble, especially while driving a vintage car with “our” hero bouncing around in the back. She would appear again the same year in *The Final Executioner* by Romolo Guerrieri, only to disappear from the scene.
Jazz musician Cal Taormina, a significant collaborator of masters like Oliver Onions and Morricone, personally handled the modest soundtrack. An Italian-style adventure with highs and lows, with more effort in the script, something superior could have emerged. Margheriti’s direction is solid, without many frills or inventions, yet well-calibrated.
