This is a Iranian short film named “The Frozen Rose”. Its story is an excerpt from the movie Khodahafez Rafik meaning Goodbye my Friend (2003) which includes three mini stories. This story is about a young girl named Rukkayah and her deep desire to see her father again who had already been martyred on the frontlines during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988). We see at the beginning that when the train which carries Iranian soldiers stops, this little girl is the only one who stands in the same position until the other children move away after having sold their flowers to the soldiers. Every morning she cuts flowers and offers them to the soldier who will be martyred without taking their worth in return. The end of this movie is very powerful and moving. In essence, the whole story relies on the fact that Rukkayah hasn’t accepted that her father has passed away 2 years ago.

The director created effectively a melancholic atmosphere in this short film. Besides, the actors are stunning, and especially the little girl!!!

These soldiers represent the ugliness of the war as all soldiers, and this little girl, like all children, represents purity, the beauty of life and love. These soldiers want to show their respect towards a being who is “superior” from every war and soldier. The film is intense and powerful, and the down-toned colors and brilliant cinematography complement the unreal part of the narrative.

German-Finnish coproduction documentary which has not been published before 1999. Film is an accurate description of the Finnish Waffen-SS volunteers from 1941 to 1943. Recruited in spring 1941, trained in Germany and all the way to the Caucasus. Narrated by a young TK man, front radio commentator Veikko Itkonen (1919-1990).

Untitled and without any crew credits, this 32-minute silent documentary takes you on a tour of MGM in 1925, meeting the people who create the movies, and watching some of them do it. I found it fascinating, especially when some of the moviemakers were identified by the inter-titles. It was nice to be able finally to attach a face to some familiar names such as writers Agnes Christine Johnston, Jane Murfin, Waldemar Young and others who are identified and shown in closeups. I noted that Howard Hawks was included as a writer – he didn’t start directing until later. Less interesting were the showing of groups of unidentified crew members: about 50 cameramen lined up in a row, each hand cranking their cameras, seemed to serve no useful purpose. Unlike the writers, who were identified individually, the directors were all identified first in an inter-title, and the camera then panned across them standing in a row, but you could not tell which name belonged to which director. I did recognize Erich von Stroheim, but only because he was also a famous actor. When the actors and actresses were introduced as a group by inter-titles, it was much more fun, because identifying them became a game. I also saw three unlisted actors: Ford Sterling, William Haines and Sojin, and there are probably others.

Later on, some actors and some crew members were identified and shown in closeup. I finally got to see what famed art director Cedric Gibbons looked like. And it was delightful to see “the world’s foremost designer,” Romaine de Tirtoff Erte, fitting a gown on “M-G-M’s ‘find’ of 1925,” Joan Crawford, when she was still known as Lucille Le Sueur. I enjoyed famous actors clowning around: John Gilbert puts his hat in position to hide his kissing Zasu Pitts, and Norma Shearer mugs the camera while ‘accidentally’ dropping hundreds of fan letters.

Most interesting were shots of the filming of two movies: Tod Browning directing a scene for Mystic, The (1925), and Edmund Goulding directing Conrad Nagel and Lucille La Verne in Sun-Up (1925). And there’s much more to this enjoyable documentary. It eventually acquired a music soundtrack, which is the way it is shown every once in a while on the Turner Classic Movies Channel (TCM). Unfortunately, it has never been scheduled (probably because it has no title), but is a filler whenever a two-hour slot is scheduled for a silent film that runs less than an hour and a half. Man, remember when Rhino Records and Video was actually cool? They used to be one of the finest providers of low-brow trash on video and great oldies onto CD. Nowadays, they unfortunately sold out to the majors and the product just isn’t the same. This compilation video though is a reminder of the good old days. Its a collection of vintage sex eduction films and clips and trailers from nudie flicks. Nothing hardcore mind you, just plenty of sexless topless females. Sure, there’s been many similar compilations since and with the advent of the internet, many of this material is readily available. Plus, the sequencing leaves a bit to be desired (it starts off with the educational footage, than goes to the nudie footage). However, if you can find it for a rental, this’ll provide an hour’s worth of kitschy fun. My personal favorite footage was the one about the boy who gets the girl pregnant and finds out about it during his tour of duty, prompting his good and bad sides to talk to him. I wish I could identify the short! (6/10)
